About Our 2x3 Living Room Rugs

Is a 2x3 rug too small for a living room?

It is too small to be the main rug (you need an 8x10 or 9x12 for that). However, it is the perfect size for accents within the living room—like in front of a patio door, in front of the fireplace, or layered under a specific accent chair or plant stand.

Can I use a 2x3 rug in front of a fireplace?

Yes, this is a classic use (often called a "hearth rug"). It adds coziness and protects the floor. For safety, we recommend 100% wool rugs for this purpose, as wool is naturally flame-retardant and self-extinguishing if a spark lands on it. Synthetic rugs can melt.

How do I layer a small rug over a big one?

The most common look is a "floating" layer. Place a large neutral rug (like jute) down first. Then, place the 2x3 rug on top, usually centered in front of a chair or simply used as a color accent in an open space. Use carpet tape to keep the corners of the small rug flat.

Can I put a 2x3 rug under a coffee table?

Generally, no. Most coffee tables are larger than 2x3 feet, so the rug would disappear underneath. It works better under a small side table or a plant stand, or out in the open in front of a door.

Do I need a rug pad if layering?

Yes, but a different kind. If layering on top of another rug, use a thin, sticky "rug-on-rug" pad or double-sided rug tape. This prevents the small rug from "creeping" or wrinkling as people walk over it.
