Handmade Turkish Rugs

This is our full collection of handmade Turkish rugs: every piece was made by hand in Anatolia, and there is only one of each. Most are vintage; product pages list the origin, materials and approximate decade.

Types of Handmade Turkish Rugs

  • Hand-knotted rugs: wool pile tied with the symmetrical Turkish knot.
  • Kilims: flat-woven, pileless and often reversible.
  • Tulu: long-pile rugs woven for warmth.
  • Hemp rugs: rare flat-weaves made from natural hemp fiber.

Handmade vs. Machine-Made

A handmade rug shows small irregularities in size, pattern and color, and its design is visible on the back. Machine-made and printed rugs are uniform. If you want a printed design that goes in the washing machine, see our washable rugs. For handmade wool by size, see handmade wool rugs.

How can I tell a rug is handmade?

Turn it over: on a handmade rug the pattern is clearly visible on the back, and size, color and motifs show small irregularities. Machine-made rugs look uniform.

What materials are these rugs made of?

Most have a wool pile on a cotton foundation. Some are wool on wool, and a few rare pieces are made of hemp. Materials are listed on each product page.

What is the difference between a kilim and a knotted rug?

A kilim is flat-woven with no pile, so it is thin and light. A knotted rug has a pile made of individually tied knots.

Are handmade Turkish rugs durable?

Yes. Many of these rugs have been in use for decades. With a rug pad and regular vacuuming they can last for many more years.

Is there only one of each?

Yes. Every rug in this collection is one-of-a-kind and cannot be reordered once it sells.
