Handmade Wool Rugs from Anatolia
Every rug in this collection is a handmade wool rug woven in Anatolia, Turkey. Most are hand-knotted with a wool pile on a cotton foundation; others are flat-woven kilims made entirely of wool. Each one is vintage, and there is only one of each.
Why Wool
- Durable: wool fibers are naturally resilient, which is why these rugs are still in use decades after they were woven.
- Naturally soil-resistant: the lanolin and structure of wool help it shed everyday dirt.
- Rich color: wool takes dye deeply, so the colors soften with age instead of washing out flat.
- Natural fiber: wool pile on a cotton or wool foundation. See wool on wool rugs.
Hand-Knotted or Flat-Woven
Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot with the symmetrical Turkish knot and have a short pile, usually around 0.2 in. Flat-woven kilims have no pile at all; the pattern is woven into the structure, so they are thin, light and often reversible.
