Vintage Oushak Rugs
A vintage Oushak is a hand-knotted wool rug woven in the Uşak region of western Anatolia, recognized by its large-scale, loosely drawn patterns and a softened palette of saffron, terracotta, ivory, sage and faded blue. Every rug in this collection is an original piece with genuine age — not a reproduction — sold as a single, unrepeatable item with the wear, dimensions and colour it has carried for decades. When one sells, there is no second one.
What Defines the Oushak Weave
Oushak weaving is built on scale and restraint. Where a Persian city rug fills every inch with dense floral detail, an Oushak leaves air around its motifs: an open central medallion, a wide uncluttered field, a border that frames rather than competes. Knot density is deliberately lower and the pile is left longer, producing a fluid surface underfoot and a distinctive sheen when light crosses the room. Foundations are typically cotton warp and weft, tied with the symmetrical Turkish knot.
Natural Dyes and Abrash
Traditional Oushak colour came from madder root, indigo, walnut husk and pomegranate rind. Natural pigments age differently than synthetics — they soften rather than dulling to grey, which is why a seventy-year-old Oushak still reads warm and sun-washed. The horizontal striations visible across many fields, known as abrash, occur when a weaver moves between separately dyed wool batches. Abrash is a marker of authenticity and hand production, not a defect.
Highland Wool
Oushak weavers used long-staple wool from local highland sheep, hand-spun and high in natural lanolin. That lanolin content is why a well-kept Oushak resists soiling and gains lustre with age instead of matting. It also explains the softness that distinguishes these rugs from harder, tighter city weaves.
Age, Condition and Measurement
Age in this collection is described in three bands: antique for pieces over eighty years old, vintage for roughly forty to eighty years, and semi-vintage for younger pieces with light wear. Every product page lists the estimated decade of weaving, the origin, exact measured dimensions and a plain-language condition note.
Wear Is Part of the Object
Low pile along a walkway, a repaired selvage, a shortened fringe, a corner where colour has lifted — these are the traces of a rug that has been lived on. They are photographed rather than edited out. A vintage Oushak in perfectly uniform condition is unusual, and pieces carrying visible history often have the strongest character. Pieces that have been overdyed or intentionally distressed are labelled as such on the product page.
Dimensions Are Never Standard
Handwoven rugs are made on a loom, not cut from a roll. A piece listed at approximately 8' x 10' may measure 7'9" x 10'2", and opposite edges frequently differ by an inch or more because loom tension shifts during weaving. Order from the exact measurements shown on the product page, not the rounded size label.
Designing With a Vintage Oushak
The muted Oushak palette makes it one of the easiest antique rug types to place in a contemporary interior. In a living room, size the rug so at least the front legs of every seating piece rest on the pile — this binds the arrangement instead of leaving furniture stranded. In a dining room, allow 24 inches of rug beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the surface when pulled out. In a bedroom, run a single large piece under the bed extending 18–24 inches past each side. Because the field is open, an Oushak sits comfortably beneath patterned upholstery, layered textiles or heavy carved furniture without crowding the room.
Care and Longevity
Use a quality rug pad on every hard floor — it prevents slipping, reduces friction wear on the foundation and adds cushioning. Rotate the rug 180 degrees once or twice a year so sunlight and foot traffic distribute evenly. Vacuum with the beater bar off or raised, and never run a vacuum across the fringe. Blot spills immediately with a white cloth using water only, working from the outside inward.
